WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF? HOW YOUR BRAIN CREATES FEAR – AND HOW TO OVERCOME IT

What makes us afraid? Snakes, the dark, rejection, love, spiders, the unknown, public speaking, flying, storms, failure — though the reasons are varied, we are all hardwired to feel fear. Or are we?
What about people who never seem to be afraid? Or the small percentage of the population that literally cannot feel fear? Why are there kids completely unafraid of taking risks and then others who seem afraid of everything?
Fear’s purpose is to keep us from harm, but what if it holds us back from what we really want?

THE BIOLOGY OF FEAR

First, some facts: There is no single fear switch for humans; responding to threats involves multiple areas of the brain. We’re not 100% how, but scientists have found the amygdala—almond-shaped bundles of neurons buried deep in the brain, just above the brain stem—central to the process.
“When you sense something potentially dangerous, the amygdala sends excitatory signals to other parts of the brain, effectively saying, ‘Hey everyone, pay attention!’” says Bambi DeLaRosa, a researcher on threat processing. The areas of the brain associated with language and memory also become active in the face of fear. If the amygdala sounds the alarm, the other areas help evaluate the threat level and how you respond.
But people with the extremely rare Urbach-Wiethe disease have calcium deposits in their brains, making it impossible for them to process fear. Studies have found their amygdala completely calcified, so there’s nothing to signal for fear signs like sweating palms or a racing heart to begin. Researchers have identified only 400 people in the world with this condition.

What’s particularly striking about Urbach-Wiethe is that fear has long been critical for human survival, so living without fear can be quite dangerous. Studying subjects with this condition has also given us insights to how we deal with emotions and drives. Since people can survive without fear, perhaps it isn’t as necessary as we’ve assumed. Other paths, like logic, can take us to the correct behaviors that help us survive.
So what triggers fear in the first place? One possibility is simply not understanding how something works. But we can’t stop fear just through knowledge alone. A 2009 study compared human reaction to sweat taken from people when they were terrified to sweat from regular exercise. Just smelling the fear sweat caused the fear centers of the brain to kick in. Other animals also share fear reactions via alarm pheromones, but this work is the first to show a similar reaction in humans.
These findings suggest that just being around people who are afraid can make you fearful. And while that might not be a big deal when you’re visiting a haunted house or watching a scary movie, it can have huge impacts on your daily life. Our reactions to others’ fear might be part of what holds particularly adults back from taking risks or trying new things, whether skydiving or applying for a new job.

CULTURAL FEARS AND MODERN LIFE

Psychological studies also bear out this idea of collective fear having a wider cultural impact. In the 1970s Roger Hart studied in the children in a small Vermont town to see what they did when they weren’t under direct adult supervision, learning about their secret places for play and favorite spots where they roamed. He returned in 2004 and found a completely different set of norms. These parents, some of whom were subjects in the 1970s research, are much more concerned with the minute-by-minute facts of their children’s lives. Unsupervised play is almost unheard of and children stay much closer to home. Yet crime rates are exactly the same as they were 40 years ago. “There’s a fear” among the parents, Hart told The Atlantic, “an exaggeration of the dangers, a loss of trust that isn’t totally clearly explainable.”

But if you’re surrounded by others who aren’t afraid to let their kids roam around, chances are you won’t be either. There is power in who we surround ourselves with as well as how our culture shifts its norms. As Tony Robbins says, “Who you spend time with is who you become.”
This is just one example of how fear often comes from the stories we tell ourselves; we bet you can think of more. Frequently parents project their own fears onto children or get them to repeat their own fear-driven patterns. Other stories we tell ourselves can lead us to fear everything from rejection to success. What then can we do to prevent fear from holding us or our children back?

WAYS TO LEVERAGE FEAR

You need to use fear, otherwise it uses you. Remember, bravery isn’t being fearless and unafraid; it’s being fearful and doing something anyway. Ways to use fear include figuring out what your fear tells you about your current situation and what it can teach you.
One way people handle their fear is to push themselves to face extremes, whether climbing mountains or walking over coals. Just take the firewalk at UPW. Instead of letting fear win, people lean into their fear and find they can achieve anything they put their minds to. As an 11-year-old firewalker explained, you have to mentally prepare for the experience, “otherwise you surrender to the fear and that will conquer other parts of your life.” Fire walking made him feel like “Superman”; “It had nothing to do with my feet but was about following through on a promise.”
No matter your age, you’ll never overcome a fear holding you back by walking away from it. Take courage and focus on what the fear will bring your way and you’ll be truly unstoppable.

How to Get Anything You Want in Life - Grant Cardone

What if there was a formula to get anything you want in life? Well, successful people know that achieving your dreams is just a case of finding others who are where you want to be, and modelling their behaviours and strategies until you get there too.

Success leaves clues...

PASSION VS. PROFITABILITY – DO YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE?

Tony Robbins wrote the foreword to Bobbi Rebell’s new book, “How to be a Financial Grownup: Proven Advice from High Achievers on How to Live Your Dreams and Have Financial Freedom.” The following is an excerpt from the chapter inspired by Charles Best, Founder and CEO of DonorsChoose.org.

MY FINANCIAL GROWNUP MOMENT

I’ve been a fan of bass fishing for as long as I can remember. In the sixth grade I planned to start my own business making custom fishing lures. I researched all of the costs for my tiny venture – from the molds and molten lead I’d need to make the lure weights, to the classified ads I’d need to promote my product in Bassmaster Magazine. This was before Amazon, Etsy, or Kickstarter ever existed. Ultimately I realized that the start-up costs and the number of lures I’d have to sell to recoup my investment were too much. Instead I became a soccer referee to make some cash.

MY LESSON TO SHARE

The most incredible businesses are started by entrepreneurs who relentlessly pursue their passion, but passion works best with a thoughtful, ambitious-yet-grounded business plan.

WEIGH PASSION VS. PROFITABILITY

Charles Best makes a great point, and it ties into Cynthia Rowley’s business philosophy. We all want to follow our passion. We want to make money at what we’re really good at or what we enjoy doing. But that doesn’t always mean the market will reward us financially for that skill or hobby. It just may not be the career or business that will help us achieve our goals, which should include being financially successful. There’s a big difference between a passion that makes a great hobby and one that will lead to financial stability and freedom.

DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE

We have been indoctrinated by years of seeing those commercials and news reports where someone ditched the high-pressure Wall Street banking job in order to follow their passion for something artistic and fun, like making cupcakes. Or artisanal beer. Or becoming a farmer. And it may be true that that person is happier leaving behind the pressures of that high-stress job. But there’s a lot left unsaid in that beautifully-shot, 30- or 60-second ad or 3-minute news report.
First, if the person really did spend 20 years in a miserable and demanding but lucrative job, odds are they’ve amassed a huge financial cushion. They had the resources, education, and capital to start the bakery or other adorable small business they now run. And while in this aspirational world they love being up at the crack of dawn to bake cupcakes seven days a week (if you believe the glorified story that they’re always hands-on like that), the reality is that they are up at the crack of dawn, seven days a week.

GO IN WITH YOUR EYES OPEN

The lower income these entrepreneurs now make is romanticized because now they’re in control. But they’re also now dealing with the incredible demands of a small business, which includes employees, payroll, inventory, supplies, rent, price pressures, and all the various challenges of growing a business. It could have been the best choice in the world for them, but stress-free it’s not. And, for a while at least, it’s probably also not that lucrative. Not everyone can execute a startup. Be realistic about your ability.
Starting your own business can be a great idea, but, as Charles Best points out, it must be thoughtfully researched and grounded in reality. Whether it’s custom fishing lures or turning grandma’s recipe into the next big thing, be deliberate and measured in your approach. Go in with your eyes open.

BE WELL-CAPITALIZED

Serial entrepreneur Shari Schneider learned the hard way.
She had success early on with two wine bars (called Divine Bar) in New York City in the early 2000s when Wall Street was booming. But then she wanted to expand into restaurants. She signed a lease for a prime location on New York City’s Upper West Side. But she didn’t anticipate all the red tape involved. Her opening was delayed, and her costs soared. When she finally opened for business, she had a great restaurant and lots of community support. The place was packed. Anyone who came to eat would have thought she was rolling in cash. But financially she was already behind the eight ball. Her business folded within a year.

So if you’re going to start a business, make sure that you have enough capital to last much longer than you expect. Anticipate not only little revenue but high costs as well, such as rent and construction.
Also make sure there’s a clear need for your business. While this was not Schneider’s primary challenge, it didn’t help that there were plenty of other restaurants around. Finding a niche that’s just emerging is a great way to gain traction right from the get go. That was the case of Betterment CEO Jon Stein, who seized on the need for more-automated investment advice when he conceived his robo-advisory business, Betterment.

How to Optimize Your Life - The 10 Principles of Optimal Living!

Top life hacks for optimising your life!

Which is your favourite of these 10 principals?

My Vegan Journey: 11 Months Of Self Improvement And The Law Of Attraction

On my birthday last year in February, I gorged myself on a cake from a local shop that made homemade cakes from scratch. It was so good I could not get enough and I ate for the next couple of days with some help, but I was killing it!
I had been a Pescetarian for almost a decade and was happy that I had stopped eating animals, and was doing my part to help save their lives and improve my own at the same time as well. A strange thing happened to me three days after my birthday though. I woke up and decided to go vegan. Just like that.

And So The Journey Began
I started down a road of self-discovery, and self-improvement. I watched documentaries and read books on the subject of the law of attraction.I read the Kybalion. I made a vision board of fruit and veggies and put it on top of my television But I did not stop there. I researched subjects on plant-based lifestyles and their benefits. I started to get interested in learning other subjects also. It was like something inside of me turned on and I was plugged into the great web of information and I could not absorb enough knowledge or learn fast enough.
I started watching anything to do with the conscious mind, and how it works. I got into Quantum Physics and was intrigued by "the double slit experiment proving how thoughts can change an outcome, which led me to Spirituality and Spiritual Awakenings. And my life was starting to make all kind of sense to me. Now I wanted to start traveling and see the world.Ancient history was becoming very important to learn about, and their knowledge was on the same path I was on. I learned how to meditate and since August of last year, I faithfully do it daily.
I began to care for myself from the inside out, first by letting go of people in my life that was fake and not conducive to my growth, I just let them go. I stopped watching the news because they lie and only tell you what they want you to believe. It is a distraction from what is truly important in life. My eyes were beginning to open, wide! I started to exercise regularly and drink mostly water, the higher the ph balance the better. I learned about intermediate fasting and have incorporated this into my life daily. I am thinking more clearly, sleeping better and my creativity had flourished.

I am an Artist. I always dreamt of having my work up in a gallery for people to come and see. I paint when I am in the zone and let the paintbrush just flow with all of the colors of paint. Money being tight, I would paint on pizza boxes because it was free. This year my thoughts have created my world! A friend bought me an artist's easel and canvases. Friends and family bought me more canvases, paint and art supplies, even information on calls to local artists to exhibit their work! I have had my paintings in a gallery and even sold one almost immediately this Summer.
Lastly, I have just purchased a roundtrip ticket to go to visit Germany, which has been on my bucket list forever. My life is wonderful and I am truly grateful. I just wanted to share in hopes that someone out there gets inspired to make changes that will help get you to be your best self as well. It's never too late. Thank you.
